Ho Ho Holy shit why is everything so expensive? A holiday gift guide for broke ass students

The holidays are upon us, and like many others, I absolutely love giving presents to loved ones. A home decor piece for you, a makeup palette for you, a lap top sleeve for you and what do you know, my wallet’s empty and I’m nowhere near done! Here are a few crafty ideas to save you some serious money this holiday season!

1. Make it. Come on, you totally can! You don’t have to be particularly crafty or creative to pull this off. Ever heard of the internet? Those clever creative folks are all about sharing their ideas and telling you how to do it! Search up YouTube and Pinterest with a good old “DYI christmas gifts” and you’ll be bombarded with ideas and directions. Make sure to read the comments to check for recipe/direction quality and final results other people achieved with them.

I for one, went ahead and purchased all the ingredients to make bath bombs with three girlfriends. Although the ingredients ended up costing us approximately 30$ CAD each, we ended up with 20+ bath bombs (each) which will be given as gifts. I plan on making a batch of whipped body scrub and some lip scrub, and giving little body care kits to all my lady friends/ family members.  Hand made with love is a great selling point.

Check out this link to see the recipe we used! They turned out great and fizz like it’s nobody’s business! :

Our beautiful bath bombs still in their molds! It smelled amazing!

2. Group gifts. Getting together to pool your resources (money/ingredients) is another life saver. Think siblings, a parent, a friend, etc. You can make something together, or simply pitch in and get something.  I usually team up with my sister to get my parents a gift and it works out for the both of us. Yay for teamwork!

3. Gift exchange. There are different variations, depending on family traditions and such. In general though, they end up saving you a load of cash and presents itself as a form of entertainment! Here’s a quick link to different types of gift exchanges. http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7316-gift-exchange-ideas.html

4.  Sales Sales Sales. Black friday is over, but sales items remain on the racks! Don’t be afraid to search stores with leftover sale items. In Canada, Black Friday isn’t nearly as big as in the U.S. but we still have sales during that time period. Check them out, you never know what you can find.

Here’s to a happy holiday season and a happier bank account!
